Case studys 40 Hope & Fear

  • Hope & Fear is the external manifestation of internal desires and paranoia that are adrift in contemporary American society. What are we afraid of? What do we love? How does our society function, and what does it worship?

Case studys 38 Hussein Chalayan

1999 Spring/ Summer
He's design based on geotropics. The notion related to 'nature', 'culture' and 'nationalism' to the space which like small geography  around our body. As a result, people get extra-large 'personal space' and extra protection from external influences. At the same time, they are carrying their environment from one place to another.

Hussein Chalayan uses physical, cultural and social dimensions of body as canvas and subject. He thinks body is not only to appreciate but a important meaning. ]From this idea, he is trying to relate clothes to a reality. He also believes that the body as physique or form and as sign or psyche are easily destroyed.
His last work is a film installation, Place and Passage, in 2003 which combines fashion, art and advertising.

Gone are the days when the use of adjustable beds are generally associated with orthopedic patients requiring special rest back or spine. But today, the correction beds are part of the modern and elegant lifestyle.

Fashion: A Philosophy (Chapter One: A philosophy of Fashion? + Conclusion)

Fashion: A Philosophy (Chapter One: A philosophy of Fashion? + Conclusion)
Lars Svendesen
Summary:
The author uses historical references about the philosophy of fashion to construct an argument about its validity, the meaning of fashion and how it affects the human experience. There is much mention about the concept of fashion and identity; how fashion, rather than being a shielding layer, is an extension of the human. Another key theme of this book is weather fashion as a concept is a primarily referencing clothing or other fields such as science, politics, arts, etc. The book also looks at the arguable victimization of humans by fashion. Are we all victims of this self-constructed object? Are we all aware of its language? Who constructs it? Who understands it? How is it used to achieve goals?
How this relates to my paper:
We are constructing anti-fashion items.
Quotes:
Fashion affects that attitude of most people toward both themselves and others, though many would deny it.
Kant: “ All fashions are, by their very concept, mutable ways of living.”
“.. clothes are the material basis of fashion, whereas fashion itself is a cultural system of meanings.”
Helene Cixous “… that clothes are not primarily a shield for the body but function rather as an extension of it.”
Kant, “ It is always better… to be a fool in fashion than a fool out of fashion.”

Case Studies 19 correct posture

1940's style with correct posture
Its interesting to remember that Pilates, now a hugely popular guide to posture was developed in the 1940's and named after Joseph Pilates.
Women of the 1940's simply had to master correct posture. There was no option.
Corset makers like Spencer did their bit to help, but there is no better alternative than simply learning how to stand, walk, and sit like a lady.

On our Youtube channel, Miss Ratherly Stern pops back in her time machine from the 1940's  with her advice on good posture.

Her finishing school for girls is a good example of what was considered important for women then. As antiquated as it appears, it's always worth grabbing the useful advice that was dished out to young women in the 1940's, as they still apply when it comes to being glamourous.

poster brace

Case Studies 18 Spinal Correction Clothing

The brillance of this brace lies in the dynamic design of that although it moves with the body while still applying corrective forces three dimensionally to the body where they are needed while still allowing the patient freedom of movement.  The dynamic brace consists of corrective and adjustable elastic bands which are interconnected to three static components that create a modular system. This allows physicians to customize treatment and it can be worn beneath the patients clothing.
Unlike traditional, cast like, rigid braces, SpineCor allows for the patient to be treated without interfering with or preventing their normal daily activities. This innovative approach also allows the patient to participate in a dynamic range of activities, like Schroth exercises and active release therapy, that also work to correct the curvatures.

The elastic bands provide moderate tension that allows for repetitive amplification of the corrective movement as the patient undertakes everyday activities. This results in a progressive curve reduction.

Compared to rigid bracing, SpineCor also improves the quality of of a patient’s social life. Since it can be comfortably worn and hidden under cloths it allows a patient to discretely treat their scoliosis while being able to work and play without being obtrusive or embarrassing.

Case Studies 17 Food Binding

Foot binding (simplified Chinese缠足traditional Chinese纏足pinyinchánzú, literally "bound feet") was a custom practiced on young girls and women for approximately one thousand years in China, beginning in the 10th century and ending in the first half of 20th century.
Foot-binding resulted in lifelong disabilities for most of its subjects. As the practice waned in the early 20th century, "some girls' feet were released after initial binding, leaving less severe deformities," according to a study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco. However, some effects of foot-binding were permanent, especially if a girl's arches or toes had been broken or other drastic measures taken in order to achieve the desired smallness. In the 1990s and early 2000s, some elderly (born until mid-1940s) Chinese women still suffered from disabilities related to bound feet.[1]
