Fashion: A Philosophy (Chapter One: A philosophy of Fashion? + Conclusion)

Fashion: A Philosophy (Chapter One: A philosophy of Fashion? + Conclusion)
Lars Svendesen
Summary:
The author uses historical references about the philosophy of fashion to construct an argument about its validity, the meaning of fashion and how it affects the human experience. There is much mention about the concept of fashion and identity; how fashion, rather than being a shielding layer, is an extension of the human. Another key theme of this book is weather fashion as a concept is a primarily referencing clothing or other fields such as science, politics, arts, etc. The book also looks at the arguable victimization of humans by fashion. Are we all victims of this self-constructed object? Are we all aware of its language? Who constructs it? Who understands it? How is it used to achieve goals?
How this relates to my paper:
We are constructing anti-fashion items.
Quotes:
Fashion affects that attitude of most people toward both themselves and others, though many would deny it.
Kant: “ All fashions are, by their very concept, mutable ways of living.”
“.. clothes are the material basis of fashion, whereas fashion itself is a cultural system of meanings.”
Helene Cixous “… that clothes are not primarily a shield for the body but function rather as an extension of it.”
Kant, “ It is always better… to be a fool in fashion than a fool out of fashion.”
